Wendy is the lucky wife of Alan, and the mother of two active and creative sons, Jack (16) and William (11). A graduate from Iowa State University, Wendy worked as a high school English teacher and speech coach. She left teaching to pursue her doctorate in Law from Drake University and became a successful attorney in the Des Moines metro area. While Wendy was in law school, her son, Jack, was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD_NOS), an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Wendy and Alan spent every spare moment feverishly research treatments, therapies and theories about Autism Spectrum Disorders.
In 2006, Wendy worked as a state organizer for Cure Autism Now to encourage all Iowa Congress members and Senators to support the Combating Autism Act, which secured much-needed funding for Autism research. Wendy has worked privately with families whose children have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other learning disabilities for the past 12 years, including establishing local support groups for parents and siblings. Wendy currently works for the West Des Moines School District, in addition to running an integrative tutoring program that provides customized academic tutoring for students of all abilities. She homeschools her two sons and teaches middle school and high school writing through the West Des Moines Homeschool Assistance Program.
